Fallen soldier's dog moves us to tears, again
Shortly before he was killed in action in Iraq in 2007, Army Spc. Justin Rollins rescued a puppy that later became one of his grieving family's only comforts. Says Justin's father Skip, "she has been a major part of our healing process, bringing us to the point we are at now after losing our son." Tuesday night, Hero was rescued again when a fire broke out at the Rollins' family's New Hampshire home. Says Newport, N.H. Fire Chief Wayne Conroy: "when I saw the condition she was in, my heart just sank…. I trust thought, 'Oh my God, the dog's not going to live.'" Hero was not breathing but came to in part thanks to the oxygen mask and treatments used in a frantic ambulance ride to the hospital. In their meeting captured here by local news station WMUR, an emotional and grateful Skip clasps Wayne's hands to say, "These guys revived my dog. It don't get no better than that. Thank you." The responders also saved Justin's medals and the flag that was draped over his casket -- irreplaceable treasures. Just a day later Hero was back to her old self. Alongside the firefighters the family also believes it was Justin, only 20 when he died, who helped her survive. "There are just too many signs... to not know that he's there, and he's looking out for us," says Skip. "And looking out for his dog." VIDEO
