Russia and China are building hypersonic missiles and it's 'complicating' things for the US
(CCTV via The Washington Free Beacon) OMAHA—China and Russia are developing maneuvering high-speed strike vehicles that pose new threats to the United States, U.S. Strategic Command leaders said Wednesday.
Adm. Cecil D. Haney, Strategic Command’s (Stratcom) senior leader, said during remarks at a nuclear deterrence conference that despite arms control efforts, hypersonic weapons are among several threatening strategic trends emerging in the world.
China has conducted four flight tests of a 7,000 mile-per-hour maneuvering strike vehicle, and Russia is developing high-speed weapons and reportedly tested a hypersonic weapon in February.
“Nation states continue to develop and modernize their nuclear weapon capabilities,” Haney said. “Nuclear and non-nuclear nations are prepared to employ cyber, counter-space, and asymmetric capabilities as options for achieving their objectives during crisis and conflict, and new technologies such as hypersonic glide vehicles are being developed, complicating our sensing and defensive approaches.”
Aluminum Ford F-150 gets mixed crash test results
DETROIT (AP) — Ford's new aluminum-sided F-150 pickup saw mixed results in new crash tests by the insurance industry, and the damaged trucks cost more to repair than steel-bodied ones.
But the Super Cab version, which has a smaller rear door and back seat, did poorly in a small front overlap test, which slams 25 percent of the front of the truck into a barrier at 40 miles per hour. It didn't earn the top safety award.
The Insurance Institute also said it took longer for a local Ford dealer to repair the aluminum truck than an older steel one, and the aluminum parts cost more. The institute said the repair costs were 26 percent higher for the aluminum-bodied truck.

Microsoft releases emergency patch for all versions of Windows - July 20, 2015
The flaw, which also affects Windows 10, allows a hacker to take over a machine.
Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band patch for a critical flaw, affecting all supported versions of Windows.
The software giant said in an advisory Monday that the vulnerability, if exploited, could "allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted document or visits an untrusted webpage that contains embedded OpenType fonts."
"An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights," the advisory added.

Inside Windows Cortana: The Most Human AI Ever Built (Will be built-in to Windows 10)
Cortana
Tony Stark had Jarvis. Luke Skywalker had C3PO. And, if Microsoft has its way, very soon you’ll have Cortana.
Like Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa, Cortana lets you talk to your devices as if they were people. And, like those two voice-driven interfaces, she can understand what you’re saying and respond in a way that feels almost human.
But unlike those other virtual entities, Cortana will work across PCs as well as phones. And it will do far more than just retrieve information; Microsoft wants Cortana to be the Alfred to your Batman — handling your communications, managing your calendar, and attending to your needs.
On July 29, when Microsoft begins releasing the latest version of its operating system, the world’s 1.5 billion Windows users will have access to one of the most human-like artificial intelligence interfaces ever made.
But Cortana presented a unique challenge to Microsoft’s developers: How do you imbue a series of bloodless algorithms with a human personality? What form should that personality take? How clever should it be? How nice? And can you persuade people to fall in love with it?
To find out, we spent time with the team behind Microsoft’s daring experiment and with Cortana herself. This is her story.
Robotic Surgery Linked To 144 Deaths In The US
How many times do I have to tell you guys that ROBOTS ARE GOING TO KILL US ALL?!?!
A study into the safety of surgical robots has linked the machines' use to at least 144 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries over a 14-year period in the US. The events included broken instruments falling into patients' bodies, electrical sparks causing tissue burns and system errors making surgery take longer than planned.
What Google Is Doing With Google+ Photos
Google+ Photos is being replaced by Google Photos. Apparently the best way to let people know you've added new features to your product is by removing the "+" from the name.
This is a common problem that hits anyone who stores information via the Web. A company plans to shut down one online service with the intention of replacing it with another. But users of the initial service express concerns, both about losing access to the service and about potentially losing their content. Google's initial blog post from Monday clearly didn't do a very good job of explaining exactly what would become of Google+ Photos, hence requiring a second post to clarify.

Savings showdown: 401(k)s vs. IRAs
Although anything from certificates of deposit to money market accounts to an envelope under the mattress can be used for retirement savings, 401(k)s and IRAs remain two of the most popular options. And with good reason. Both offer incentives that encourage workers to pad their retirement accounts while reducing their tax bill.
With both accounts offering similar benefits, you may be unsure which is best for your money. U.S. News spoke with three retirement savings experts to get their take on the pros and cons of 401(k)s and IRAs. Find out which account wins in a savings showdown.
401(k)s: "Free money" and legal protection in exchange for fewer optionsIn 2015, workers can deposit up to $18,000 tax-free into a 401(k) account. If you're age 50 or older you can add another $6,000 to that amount.
"The advantage of most plans is there is some type of matching contribution," says Michael Woomer, senior vice president of institutional and retirement plan services at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh.

Ex-sheriff's deputy indicted after child severely burned in raid
ATLANTA (Reuters) - A federal grand jury in Georgia on Wednesday indicted a former sheriff’s deputy involved in a drug raid that left a 19-month-old child severely burned from a flash bang grenade explosion.
The indictment charges former Habersham County deputy Nikki Autry, 29, with providing false information to a judge in order to obtain a search warrant for the raid, the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Northern District of Georgia said.
“Without her false statements, there was no probable cause to search the premises for drugs or to make the arrest,” acting U.S. Attorney John Horn said in a statement. “And in this case, the consequences of the unlawful search were tragic.”
The toddler, Bounkham Phonesavanh, was asleep in his playpen during a “no knock" raid in May 2014 to arrest a suspect that police said had sold methamphetamine to an informant.
But prosecutors say Autry knew that no one in the residence had purchased the drugs from a police informant and did not confirm that many people were coming and going from the home.
This woman pleaded with IBM on LinkedIn to hire her as its 'oldest intern'

.(Anna Seacat) At the end of June, Anna Seacat finished her master's degree in marketing and with "laser focus" tried to get a job at IBM, she told Business Insider.
Seacat chose IBM because she feels that it "empowers" its female employees, it doesn't force workers to commute to an office, has room for advancement, and it eats its own dog food, using data to help make business decisions, she said.
She knew her best shot at a full-time job straight from school was by doing an internship.
One problem: At age 34, Seacat wasn't the classic intern, a lot older than the college kids interns she was competing with.

Video of Sandra Bland's arrest ignites firestorm of reactions
CNN)Anger over Sandra Bland's death in a Texas jail has boiled over after newly released video showed what happened at the traffic stop that led to her arrest.
Now, many question whether she should have been arrested at all.
The dashcam video shows Texas state Trooper Brian Encinia pulling Bland over July 10 for allegedly failing to use her turn signal. What started as normal conversation gets testy after Encinia asks her to put out her cigarette.
"I am in my car. I don't have to put out my cigarette," Bland says.
"You can step on out now," Encinia replies.
Bland refuses to get out of her car, and the trooper opens her door and starts trying to pull her out of the vehicle.
What happens after that has ignited a debate about what the officer could have done versus what he should have done.
'For a failure to signal?'
In the video, Encinia tells Bland she is under arrest. She repeatedly asks why, but the trooper does not answer, other than to say, "I am giving you a lawful order."
They argue, then Encinia pulls what appears to be his Taser and points it at Bland.
He screams: "Get out of the car! I will light you up! Get out! Now!"
Police probing death in LA find 1,200 guns, 2 tons ammo
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police investigating the death of a Los Angeles man uncovered an arsenal inside his home and garage — more than 1,200 guns and about two tons of ammunition, authorities said Monday.
Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andrew Smith called the number of rifles, pistols and shotguns staggering. Many had never been fired and some were still wrapped in boxes, with price tags still attached.
"Our truck couldn't carry it all," Smith told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1HFAKVn). "We had to go back and make another trip."
Black officer helps white supremacist suffering from heat at KKK rally
Powerful image from South Carolina Confederate flag protest goes viral
White-supremacist groups and African-American demonstrators clashed in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, resulting in at least five arrests and seven people taken to hospitals as tensions — and temperatures — flared following the recent decision to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds.
But it was the powerful image of a black police officer assisting a man wearing a black T-shirt bearing a swastika and struggling in the heat that resonated online.
In the photo, the officer, Leroy Smith, is seen holding the arm of the unidentified protester as he helped him up the stairs and out of the sun. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Columbia hit a high of 98 degrees Saturday.
The image was uploaded to Twitter by Rob Godfrey, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s deputy chief of staff. And it quickly went viral.

"It's the first time a major Japanese company has ever made such a gesture. We hope this will spur other companies to join in and do the same."
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A major Japanese corporation will offer a landmark apology this weekend for using U.S. prisoners of war for forced labor during World War II, according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center that is hosting the event.
A senior executive of Mitsubishi Materials Corp. will apologize to 94-year-old James Murphy, of Santa Maria, California, and relatives of other former POWs who toiled at plants its predecessor company operated in Japan during the conflict.
Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean at the center — an organization that primarily educates about the Holocaust — called it an important gesture, coming as it does ahead of the 70th anniversary in August of the end of the war that has heightened scrutiny of Japan's attitude to its past abuses."As far as I know, this is a piece of history," said Cooper, who is helping moderate the closed-door meeting Sunday at the center's Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. "It's the first time a major Japanese company has ever made such a gesture. We hope this will spur other companies to join in and do the same."
A press release from the Wiesenthal Center said the apology will be made by Hikaru Kimura, senior executive officer for Mitsubishi Materials Corp. The company did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment late Monday. Mitsubishi Materials U.S.A. Corp. said Tuesday it had no information about it.
Billionaire's Beach just got a lot less exclusive
Malibu, California (CNN)It wasn't a particularly good beach day, but that was beside the point. This event was all about going where the rich folks didn't want us to go.
And so, on a gray morning in early July, a small group of conservationists gathered on Billionaire's Beach, once one of California's hardest to reach. They had a beach party of sorts, simply because they could.
It felt good, in the way that off-limits things often do.
They nibbled on cookies shaped like flip-flops and gossiped about the creative measures some of the 70-plus homeowners have taken to keep the riff-raff off the sand.
Giant scissors sliced through blue ribbon while flowery words were spoken about how this was a big, important day for California's beaches. With that, the Carbon Beach West coastal access way -- a 10-foot-wide concrete walkway slicing between two fenced Malibu mansions -- was dedicated and opened.
Ex-cop accused of molestation, murder - Daniel William Hiers : 'Walsh Personal 10 Most Wanted'
(CNN)John Walsh wants to catch every fugitive profiled on his CNN show, "The Hunt." But he wants to catch Daniel William Hiers a bit more than most.
"I have been looking for Dan Hiers for over 10 years. I had the 'John Walsh Personal 10 Most Wanted,' and Dan Hiers is still on that list," Walsh says on Sunday night's episode, airing at 9 p.m. on CNN. "He gives cops a bad name."
Daniel William Hiers, 42
Hiers, a Charleston, South Carolina, police officer, gained the trust of a single mother with a young daughter. He is accused of molesting the girl for months in 2003 and 2004.
On March 15, 2005, he was due to turn himself in to authorities but never turned up. When the police searched his home, Hiers was gone and his 24-year-old wife, Mila, was dead, shot once in the back of the head.
Twitter responds to jail deaths with 'if I die in police custody'
(CNN)As far as Texas law enforcement officials are concerned, 28-year-old Sandra Bland died in a jail cell July 13 after hanging herself with a plastic bag.
But her family says the idea that Bland would kill herself is "unfathomable," prompting questions about the circumstances.
To those who believe her death is suspicious, Bland is one of the latest victims of racial bias and police brutality. But she was not the only black woman to die in custody last week.
The day after Bland's death, authorities in Alabama said, 18-year-old Kindra Chapman died after hanging herself in the Homewood City Jail. She had been arrested on a charge of first-degree robbery, accused of robbing a person of a cell phone, al.com reported.
The close timing of the two deaths under similar circumstances struck a chord with some social media users, who took to Twitter to share directives for what to do "if I die in police custody."

Police bust huge hacker black market - Darkode forum
On Wednesday, police around the world coordinated a major bust, closing down a massive, highly-guarded black market for hackers.
Darkode, the shuttered black market, was a website where hackers would trade their dangerous wares.
Criminals would swap huge batches of stolen data. Identity thieves would purchase databases of Social Security numbers and credit cards. Cyberweapons dealers would sell malware that could break into government and corporate computer networks -- or fry hardware and cause millions of dollars in damage.
Hackers who snuck into millions of computers -- and turned them into a slave network under their control -- would sell temporary access to their powerful computing power of their "botnets." These are regularly used to attack websites, overloading them and knocking them offline.
David J. Hickton, a federal prosecutor in Pennsylvania who helped lead the attack, called Darkode "one of the gravest threats to the integrity of data on computers in the United States and around the world."
The U.S. Justice Department estimate there are nearly 800 criminal Internet forums worldwide. Hickton described Darkode as "the most sophisticated English-speaking forum for criminal computer hackers in the world."

Israel assassinated top Syrian general: leaked US files
Washington (AFP) - Israel is responsible for the 2008 murder of a top security aide of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to secret US intelligence files.
Brigadier General Mohammed Sleiman was shot in the head and neck on August 1, 2008 by a small team of Israeli commandos as he enjoyed a dinner party at his luxury seaside home on the Syrian coast, said The Intercept website, citing the leaked files.
The Israeli military team then escaped by sea.
"The internal National Security Agency document, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, is the first official confirmation that the assassination of Sleiman was an Israeli military operation," said the website.
The revelation "ends speculation that an internal dispute within the Syrian government led to his death," it added.
U.S. Army special ops drills begin under cloud of Texas suspicion
AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - U.S. Army drills to train special operations forces for conflicts overseas began on Wednesday in several states including Texas, where fears of military overreach prompted the governor to ask the State Guard to monitor the exercises.
The Jade Helm 15 exercises run through Sept. 15 on public and private land with about 1,200 troops training in an area that sprawls for more than 1,000 miles. It was the first time the Army has undertaken such large-scale special ops drills, military officials said.
They will allow soldiers to "further develop tactics, techniques and procedures for emerging concepts in Special Operations warfare," U.S. Army Special Operations Command said.
The exercises had an unintended consequence when they were announced earlier this year: elaborate conspiracy theories from a small but vocal groups of people who are deeply suspicious of the federal government."Everyone needs to be worried all the time, with the Hitler wan-a-be in the whitehouse," Texan David Childers wrote in a social media discussion about the drills.
Video released shows police killing unarmed man in LA suburb - $4.7Million settlement
Video released by a federal judge Tuesday after news media organizations argued the public had a right to see the footage showed Diaz-Zeferino disobeying orders to keep his hands up, but with his palms open by his waist.
Judge Stephen V. Wilson unsealed the video so the public could see what led the city of Gardena to pay $4.7 million to settle a lawsuit with Diaz-Zeferino's family and another man wounded in the shooting that followed a botched report of a bicycle theft early the morning of June 2, 2013.
"The fact that they spent the city's money, presumably derived from taxes, only strengthens the public's interest in seeing the videos," Wilson wrote in a 13-page decision. "Moreover, defendants cannot assert a valid compelling interest in sealing the videos to cover up any wrongdoing on their part or to shield themselves from embarrassment."
Against a backdrop of intense public scrutiny of police shootings nationwide, a lawyer for The Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg argued the videos should be unsealed under a First Amendment right to access court documents.
Two pilots killed in Russian strategic bomber crash
Moscow (AFP) - Two pilots were killed when a strategic bomber with seven people on board crashed in far eastern Russia on Tuesday, the defence ministry said, the latest in a string of military aircraft accidents.

Rescuer: Teen hiking to safety after plane crash a miracle
SEATTLE (AP) — A 16-year-old girl survived a small-plane crash that killed her step-grandparents in the rugged mountains of north-central Washington state and then hiked through thick forest to safety in what a rescuer called a miracle.
Searchers still are looking for the wreckage, but Autumn Veatch says Leland and Sharon Bowman of Marion, Montana, died in Saturday's crash, according to Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers, who spoke with the girl.
"She said they were flying in the clouds, and in an instant, it opened up and there was the mountain, and they crashed into the trees," Rogers told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday. The sheriff said pilot Leland Bowman was flying too low.
The Scary Truth About Locks -- From Expert Lockpickers

Kevin Grubb, the owner of Sure Lock and Key in St. Louis, has been in the lock business for some 30 years. Picking a lock requires two tools, he says: a wrench and a pick, plus the dexterity and practice to use them.
Someone that good probably isn’t looking to hit up a house, says Grubb, but looking for the places with far more valuable goods.
Mom REFUSES To Break Into Expensive BMW To Save Toddler Son From Heat
A mum has sparked outrage after she refused to allow firefighters to break into her car to save her toddler son from the heat because the vehicle was too expensive to damage.
