Each summer, brown bears congregate at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park in Alaska where they enjoy a feeding frenzy of sockeye salmon that are attempting to make their way up the river.
Sometimes you’ll find as many as 25 bears fishing for salmon, and sometimes you’ll find bears fighting for the best fishing spot. Like these two bears that were captured on video by the Brooks Falls webcam on Explore.org (we suggest viewing with the sound on to hear the battle):
The bears often stand on the edge of Brooks Falls and face downriver. The salmon that are attempting to jump the falls are often caught in midair by the jaws of the bears. Sometimes the bears will simply claw the salmon.
In this case, the two bears apparently sought the same salmon and both missed, resulting in the bears coming to blows, unwilling to share the spot any longer.
But once the dominant bear succeeded in securing the fishing spot, he did a curious thing. He did a belly flop into the pool below. Here’s the entire video:
