Go quad-core or go home. Come 2012, that's going to be the mantra for a lot of smartphones equipped with powerful Nvidia Tegra 3 processors. A leak's revealed that HTC's "Edge" will be quite a little monster of a smartphone.
PocketNow reports the Edge will have a 4.7-inch screen with 1280x720 resolution display (just like the Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound) and a 1.5GHz quad-core (dual-core is so 2011) Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1GB RAM, 8-megapixel camera (28mm f/2.2) with LED flash and possibly 32GB of internal storage and Beats audio. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, along with HTC Sense 4.0 is likely a given as well.
If the smartphone is anything like the Rezound, then the camera should be quite the performer with a variety of special photo effects for 2D stills and HD 1080p video, audio should be bass-heavy because of Beats integration and the display should be extremely sharp (notebook-class sharp).
The only thing that's left is whether the Edge will support 4G LTE data and if its battery will be large enough to handle said data, 720p display and the power of Tegra 3.
What kind of benefits will quad-core bring? Think graphics. The PS Vita that launches this December in Japan has a quad-core processor (not a Nvidia Tegra 3) and it's packing major heat.
