12 Monkeys series officially gets a pilot order from Syfy

That 12 Monkeys series we heard about a while back at Syfy has taken another step forward, with the network ordering a 60-minute pilot to see how the script will look on-screen.
The pilot script, written by time-travel vets Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Terra Nova), is an effort to adapt Terry Gilliam’s cult-hit 1995 sci-fi flick of the same name. The film followed a man (Bruce Willis) sent back in time to try and avert a deadly plague that takes out most of humanity.
Veteran filmmaker Charles Roven (12 Monkeys, The Dark Knight trilogy) has signed on as a producer, along with Richard Suckle (Fallen). Shooting is tentatively set to begin in November.
The concept seems ripe for exploration as a weekly series, so long as a compelling mythology is built around it. For the official setup, here’s the synopsis via Syfy:
Based on the classic hit film, 12 Monkeys follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race.
The 12 Monkeys series joins a packed development slate at the network, including Bryan Fuller’s High Moon, Ronald D. Moore’s Helix, the angel-war series Dominion and a handful of other projects working through the phases.
