Of course China chose not to confront our flight through its claimed territory ("U.S. Sends B-52s on Mission," page one, Nov. 27) and jeopardize its U.S. retail outlet, which very largely finances its military.
Simple but hard choices must be made immediately. If Japan and Taiwan are to hold their own against increasingly belligerent, nuclear-armed China and Russia, they must acquire the means to threaten a mutual assured destruction or suffer one humiliation after another. Or we must be prepared, though impossibly indebted, to defend these two wealthy countries while they spend a laughable 1% of their GDP on their own defenses
