Toyota details new 1.2L turbo
Toyota has released full details on its latest turbocharged engine. The mill is the second in Toyota's new series of highly-efficient powerplants.
Set to make its world debut in the Japanese-market Auris, the new 1.2L four-cylinder boasts both turbocharging and direct-injection technology, resulting in a maximum output of 114 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque. Toyota says the 1.2L will offer about the same performance as a conventional 1.6L engine.

The new mill is also equipped with Toyota's variable valve timing, which allows the engine to use the Atkinson cycle during certain loads. As a result, Toyota says the engine is one of the most thermally efficient on the market today.

Although Toyota has made a name for itself by producing highly efficient hybrid vehicles, the company says that fuel sipping gas engines will be an important part of the auto industry for the foreseeable future.

"Despite the success of hybrids, Toyota is aware that vehicles with conventional powertrains still represent the majority of vehicles sold," Toyota said in a statement. "By constantly increasing environmental performance across its entire vehicle lineup, Toyota aims to offer a portfolio of environment-friendly vehicles that meet the diverse needs of consumers."

Toyota has not announced any plans to sell the 1.2L turbo in the United States. However, Toyota will soon sell a version of the Auris here as the Scion iM, so it's not completely out of the question.
