Apple snapping up small tech firms

Since its founding in 1976, Apple has acquired 28 companies, less than one deal a year.

But the Cupertino company is shedding its conservative ways and is on something of a buying binge, reportedly notching its sixth buy in the last year. The latest pickup is a Canadian mapping startup called Poly9 Group, which creates 3-D global maps.

But if correct, the latest deal signals a larger shift for Apple as it seeks to stay ahead of the market it helped popularize: smart phones. Remaining successful in smart phones is vital for Apple, which now derives 40 percent of its sales from the iPhone. Issues like the iPhone 4's controversial antenna, which is expected to be addressed in a news conference at the company's headquarters today, are magnified because of the success of the iPhone.  LINK
