The "Gravity Stool" turns traditional furniture on its head. Dutch designer Jólan van der Wiel "grows" his furniture using only magnets and a mix of plastic and iron filings. The result? Each piece is unique and something that looks like it came from Middle Earth.
So how do you grow furniture? van der Wiel created a machine that operates like a reverse press where strong magnets pull the liquid plastic filled with the filings up as the magnets rise. While the bases — which ends up as the seat — remain pretty much the same, the legs are the whim of gravity and physics.
And they're freakin' awesome.
van der Wiel created the Gravity Stool and the Gravity Tool that makes them as part of his graduation project from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. His design creed is using the combination of natural forces with technology to create original new designs.
Mission accomplished.
