More than a year after the first arrests were made in this case, five men have been charged with hacking and a data breach scheme that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.
From 2005 to 2012, the men and four co-conspirators - including two who live in the U.S. - seized at least 160 million credit and debit card numbers from institutions including Dow Jones, NASDAQ, J.C. Penney, JetBlue, and 7-Eleven, according to the indictment, which was released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Jersey today just hours before the U.S. Attorney Paul Fisman held a news conference. Just three of the corporate victims lost more than $300 million, authorities allege.
