When Is It Morally Right To Kill A Zombie?

When is it morally right to kill a zombie? The obvious answer is "ANYTIME!"
So does this mean that killing zombies is a morally questionable thing? It’s a trope that often plays an important part in the narrative of zombie stories. Imagine you’re the protagonist, and you have the opportunity to kill one of the undead. But you hesitate, maybe because you recognise the zombie, or maybe because you think you see a trace of the person’s past persona in the approaching horror. That split second of indecision could be enough for you to lose the advantage, and get munched on. But you have to appreciate that hesitation. The monster in front of you was once a living, breathing person with hopes, fears and dreams.

How the NSA is infiltrating private networks

The NSA, working with its British counterpart, the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), secretly taps into the internal networks of Yahoo and Google, the two biggest Internet companies by overall data traffic. The operation intercepts information flowing between the enormous data centers that those companies maintain around the world. In general, Google and Yahoo use privately owned or leased lines to synchronize their data centers. This graphic shows how the NSA and GCHQ break into those internal networks, using Google’s as an example. Less is known about Yahoo’s networks, but the NSA operations are thought to be similar.

Louisiana parish provides extreme example of inequality

In a speech marking the 50th anniversary of the March on WashingtonPresident Barack Obamacalled economic inequality "the great unfinished business" of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. AndLouisiana's East Carroll Parish provides an extreme example of the inequality found in much of the country.

The richest 5 percent in the parish earn $611,000 per year on average, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, while the poorest 20 percent make $6,800. According to the Tax Policy Center, those earning $611,000 are among the top 1 percent in the United States. Those with income of $6,800, meanwhile, are among the bottom 5 percent.

The unemployment rate is 16 percent, or more than double the national average.

But according to John Sutter, who recently traveled to the town of Lake Providence in the parish for CNN's Change the List project, few of its 7,500 residents are complaining.

The Hacker Who Owned Mark Zuckerberg

Wait....exploiting a bug so you can post on Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook page is considered a hacking accomplishment?
It was August 14, and Shreateh had just reached halfway around the world to pull off a prank that would make him the most famous hacker in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. He’d discovered a Facebook bug that would allow him to post to another user’s wall even if he wasn’t on the user’s friends list.

NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide, Snowden documents say

The National Security Agency has secretly broken into the main communications links that connect Yahoo and Google data centers around the world, according to documents obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and interviews with knowledgeable officials.
By tapping those links, the agency has positioned itself to collect at will from hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans. The NSA does not keep everything it collects, but it keeps a lot.
According to a top-secret accounting dated Jan. 9, 2013, the NSA’s acquisitions directorate sends millions of records every day from internal Yahoo and Google networks to data warehouses at the agency’s headquarters at Fort Meade, Md. In the preceding 30 days, the report said, field collectors had processed and sent back 181,280,466 new records — including “metadata,” which would indicate who sent or received e-mails and when, as well as content such as text, audio and video.

'Minicomputers' Live Inside the Human Brain

The brain may be an even more powerful computer than before thought — microscopic branches of brain cells that were once thought to basically serve as mere wiring may actually behave as minicomputers, researchers say.
The most powerful computer known is the brain. The human brainpossesses about 100 billion neurons with roughly 1 quadrillion — 1 million billion — connections known as synapses wiring these cells together.
Neurons each act like a relay station for electrical signals. The heart of each neuron is called the soma — a single thin cablelike fiber known as the axon that sticks out of the soma carries nerve signals away from the neuron, while many shorter branches calleddendrites that project from the other end of the soma carry nerve signals to the neuron. [Inside the Brain: A Photo Journey Through Time]
Now scientists find dendrites may be more than passive wiring; in fact, they may actively process information.

Ubuntu Gaming Performance On Par With Windows 8.1

According to the Linux gurus over at Phoronix, Ubuntu's gaming performance is, for the most part, on par with Windows 8.1. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or bad. wink
Given the recent release of Microsoft Windows 8.1, at Phoronix we took 13 different AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards and compared the performance between Ubuntu Linux and Windows 8.1 with the same hardware and set of OpenGL games/benchmarks. For AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards with their official drivers, the performance is largely similar between the competing desktop operating systems but there are some performance exceptions.

NSA official: 'We're really screwed now'

The National Security Agency is reportedly reeling from comments made by Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein — one of the agency's staunchest defenders — in the wake of revelations that the NSA spied on foreign leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"With respect to NSA collection of intelligence on leaders of U.S. allies — including France, Spain, Mexico and Germany — let me state unequivocally: I am totally opposed," Feinstein said in a statement Monday. “Unless the United States is engaged in hostilities against a country or there is an emergency need for this type of surveillance, I do not believe the United States should be collecting phone calls or emails of friendly presidents and prime ministers. The president should be required to approve any collection of this sort.

“It is my understanding that President Obama was not aware Chancellor Merkel’s communications were being collected since 2002," Feinstein continued. "That is a big problem."

Facebook Inc. is testing technology that would greatly expand the scope of data that it collects about its users, the head of the company’s analytics group said Tuesday. The social network may start collecting data on minute user interactions with its content, such as how long a user’s cursor hovers over a certain part of its website, or whether a user’s newsfeed is visible at a given moment on the screen of his or her mobile phone, Facebook analytics chief Ken Rudin said Tuesday during an interview.

Baby's Emotional Reaction to Mother's Song

Nothing is stronger than the bond between mother and child. This certainly rings true at the Leroux household in Ontario, Canada. Their daughter loves one of her mom’s songs so much, it send sher into floods of tears, every time she hears it. Mom Amanda Leroux told Storyful: “No one can explain why, not even I. I can sing any other song and do not get the same reaction from her. It’s to adorable to keep all to ourselves.” Update: The song is "My Heart Can't Tell You No," which has been performed by both Rod Stewart and Sara Evans. Credit:Alain Leroux.

It’s man overboard as angry billfish jumps into boat

Chaotic incident involving hooked marlin calls for extreme evasive action on the part of the crew.

A billfish leaps into the boat
The trouble with marlin fishing is that sometimes, although rarely, the acrobatic fish find their way into the boat before they’ve been sufficiently tired out.
When that happens, the scene can become chaotic and the crew must react on instinct.
For one crewman, as seen in the accompanying footage (posted below), that means jumping overboard to escape the flailing billfish.

Brooke Greenberg: 20-Year-Old "Toddler's" Legacy of Hope and Love

The baffling case of Brooke Greenberg, a 20-year-old who never developed beyond the  toddler stage, may provide clues to help scientists unlock the secrets of longevity and fight age-related disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and heart disease. Brooke, who passed away last Thursday, had the body and cognitive function of a 1-year-old. She didn't grow after the age of 5 — and basically, she stopped aging entirely.

"Brooke Greenberg, even after her sad passing, may help to reveal answers to one of the major mysteries in human biology: Why do we age and is there any way to slow or suspend the aging process?" Dr. Eric Schadt, director of the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, tells Yahoo Shine.

Robocop 2014: 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Excited

When it comes to remakes the reaction of most film fans appears to be a very negative one, and who could blame them? Hollywood ran out of ideas some years ago, so they often try to appeal to newer audiences remaking cult classics. However no remake has a bigger share of hate than Jose Padilha’s Robocop. Why?
After seeing how people are reacting about the Evil Dead remake and the Carrie remake it’s quite confusing to me to see that they’re giving them a chance but not to this one.
So, in order to prove my point, here are the five reasons of why you should be excited about Jose Padilha’s Robocop.

Intel: Small Businesses Burdened by Aging PCs

The Intel Small Business PC Refresh Study surveyed 736 small businesses in Brazil, China, Germany, India, Russia and the United States to gauge the state of their PC equipment. According to the findings, small businesses are holding onto PCs significantly beyond the recommended refresh date, with more than 36 percent owning PCs that are more than 4 years old. These machines require more maintenance, exerting a greater toll on employee productivity and higher equipment costs than the purchase of a new machine.

Navy's giant, stealthy new destroyer gets hull wet

The first-in-class Zumwalt, the largest U.S. Navy destroyer ever built, is seen in dry dock Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, in Bath, Maine. The ship features an unusual wave-piercing hull, electric drive propulsion, advanced sonar and guided missiles, and a new gun that fires rocket-propelled warheads as far as 100 miles. Unlike warships with towering radar- and antenna-laden superstructures, the Zumwalt will ride low to the water to minimize its radar signature, making it stealthier than others. (AP Photo/Robert F. BATH, Maine (AP) -- There was no band. No streamers. No champagne.
The Navy's stealthy Zumwalt destroyer floated out of dry dock without fanfare Monday night and into the waters of the Kennebec River, where the warship will remain dockside for final construction.
The largest destroyer ever built for the Navy, the Zumwalt looks like no other U.S. warship, with an angular profile and clean carbon fiber superstructure that hides antennas and radar masts.
"The Zumwalt is really in a league of its own," said defense consultant Eric Wertheim, author of the "The Naval Institute Guide to Combat Fleets of the World."

Scariest Movie Endings: 9 Impossible-to-Forget GIFs

WARNING: SPOILERS!
You know how it goes: a horror movie is wrapping up, and you're starting to get that safe feeling — that mix of triumph and relief that you made it all the way to the end credits without too much psychological damage. And just when you're about to turn on the lights and commence with cleaning up all the popcorn crumbs from the couch, BOO! There's one final fright to keep you up all night.
Here are nine of those instances — and in GIF form, just to make sure they're imprinted on your brain forever and ever.

Pregnant Woman Files Charges Over Belly Rubbing

There are plenty of not-so-fun aspects of pregnancy: Morning sickness, swollen feet, weight gain. And then there's the dreaded "tummy rub," a common gesture from a well-meaning friend, family member, or co-worker who just can’t resist rubbing the woman's stomach. One expectant mother in Pennsylvania is standing up to unwanted rubs by charging a man with harassment after he touched her stomach without consent.

A representative from the Pennsylvania State Police tells Yahoo Shine that earlier this month, 57-year-old Richard J. Beishline visited his neighbor, a 30-year-old pregnant woman named Michelle Troutman in Frankfort, Pennsylvania. According to the police report, after giving Troutman a hug, Beishline said, “I just want to be friends” and rubbed her stomach. Troutman pushed him away, and he quickly left. She has since filed harassment charges against Beishline, and if he pleads guilty, he’ll pay a fine determined by a judge. If he pleads not guilty, both parties will have to testify in court.

The 10 Least reliable cars

Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Three out of the 10 least reliable vehicles have high-enough test scores to be recommended, but their poor reliability prevents them from reaching that recommended status. So, it's important to look at performance in our tests and reliability, because a high scoring car isn't always a smart purchase choice if it isn't reliable.Just because a model is reliable, doesn't mean it is recommended by Consumer Reports. Five out of the top 10 most reliable vehicles don't perform well enough in our tests for us to recommend them. The opposite happens as well; some vehicles that score well in our testing are not recommended because they have below average predicted reliability.

Are USED Baby products safe?

When should you buy used baby items?
Which used baby products are relatively safe bets—especially if you want to help save money and the environment—and which should you avoid, even if they’re free? Here are some guidelines from Consumer Reports and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), an industry trade group.
Hand-me-downs worth considering
This year’s theme for Baby Safety Month last month was "Green is the New Pink and Blue" and focused on recycling or reusing baby products. But think twice before accepting any second-hand baby gear as not all products meet today’s stricter safety standards.
Baby clothing. Gently used baby clothes can be softer and more comfortable, since they’ve been washed a few times. And because children outgrow them so quickly, you can easily find used clothes in good condition. But watch out for these hazards.
  • Drawstrings and toggles, which can pose a strangulation hazard, and violate the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s standards.
  • Sewn-on decorative elements, snaps or buttons that pose a choking hazard if swallowed.
  • Loosely knitted sweaters, booties, or hats that can trap a baby's fingers or toes.
  • Tight elastic bands on the sleeves, legs, neckline, or waist, which can restrict circulation.
  • Sleepwear that isn’t flame-resistant (check the label).

iCar? Analyst says Apple should buy Tesla

Should Apple's next killer product be the iCar?

Taking his lead from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, analyst Andaan Ahmad at German investment bank Berenberg has written an open letter to Apple chief executive Tim Cook and chairman Arthur Levinson. Ahmad calls on Apple (AAPLFortune 500) to buy electric carmaker Tesla (TSLA).
The London-based Ahmad -- who says he's covered the tech industry for nearly 20 years -- argued in Friday's letter that Apple's shift into the auto sector could give the company the kind of revenue growth that won't be sustainable from just smartphones and other mobile devices over the longer-term.

Why Apple Wants to Bust Your iPhone

At first, I thought it was my imagination. Around the time the iPhone 5S and 5C were released, in September, I noticed that my sad old iPhone 4 was becoming a lot more sluggish. The battery was starting to run down much faster, too. But the same thing seemed to be happening to a lot of people who, like me, swear by their Apple products. When I called tech analysts, they said that the new operating system (iOS 7) being pushed out to existing users was making older models unbearably slow. Apple phone batteries, which have a finite number of charges in them to begin with, were drained by the new software. So I could pay Apple $79 to replace the battery, or perhaps spend 20 bucks more for an iPhone 5C. It seemed like Apple was sending me a not-so-subtle message to upgrade.

Of course, there are more benign explanations. The new software and recent app updates offer fancy new features that existing users want; maybe the battery is sealed with tiny five-point screws for aesthetic considerations. Perhaps, but this isn’t the first time that tech analysts and random crazies on the Internet have noted that breakdowns in older Apple products can often coincide with when upgrades come onto the market. Many have taken this as evidence of “planned obsolescence,” a term that dates to the Great Depression, when a real estate broker suggested that the government should stimulate the economy by placing artificial expiration dates on consumer products so people would buy more.

N. Korea upgrading main launch site: US think-tank

Seoul (AFP) - North Korea has undertaken major construction work at its main missile launch site, possibly to cater to larger and more mobile weapons, a US think-tank said Tuesday.
Satellite images taken earlier this month suggest construction of a second flat mobile launch pad at the Sohae missile site, the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University posted on its 38 North website.
Work has also been carried out on Sohae's main launch pad, "possibly to upgrade that facility to handle future larger rockets," the post said.
The pad was used for the launch in December of the North's Unha-3 carrier, which successfully placed a satellite in orbit.

Science Proves That Women Multitask Better Than Men

We’ve heard the ‘myth’ before — that women are better multitaskers than men, but there is little scientific evidence behind the belief. The image of a multitasking modern woman is a career-minded mother who raises kids, cleans and cooks, and manages day-to-day household tasks, all while pursuing a successful career. A group of researchers recently chose to investigate this further, and found that women had a slight advantage over men when it came to certain tasks, including creating strategies for finding lost items and not letting a longer to-do list slow them down in completing tasks.
"Using two very different experimental set ups, we found that women have an advantage over men in specific aspects of multitasking situations," Gijsbert Stoet, author of the paper, said in a press release about the study.
The researchers chose two experiments to test who may have an advantage in certain multitasking situations. In the first experiment, the researchers found that both men and women slowed down when they were faced with more than one task, but that women slowed down less than men. In the second experiment, men and women were pitted against one another and asked to complete three tasks within a time period of eight minutes. During the completion of the tasks, a phone would ring where the participant would have to answer general knowledge questions. Though men and women appeared to score equally in this experiment — which involved solving arithmetic problems and searching for restaurants on a map — women did better than their male counterparts on a task where they had to locate a lost key.

Why Is Broadband More Expensive In The US?

I'm pretty sure we all know why broadband is more expensive in the U.S. compared to the rest of the world. It starts with "M" and rhymes with onopoly. wink
We deregulated high-speed internet access 10 years ago and since then we've seen enormous consolidation and monopolies, so left to their own devices, companies that supply internet access will charge high prices, because they face neither competition nor oversight.

US weighs ending spying on allied heads of state

In this Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, file photo, a man is reflected in paneling as he speaks on his phone at the Mobile World Congress, the world's largest mobile phone trade show, in Barcelona, Spain. A Spanish newspaper published a document Monday that it said shows the U.S. National Security Agency spied on more than 60 million phone calls in Spain in one month alone — the latest revelation about alleged massive U.S. spying on allies. (AP Photo/Manu Fernandez, File)
WASHINGTON (AP) — Faced with a flood of revelations about U.S. spying practices, the White House is considering ending its eavesdropping on friendly foreign leaders, a senior administration official said.
A final decision has not been made and the move is still under review, the official said. But the fact that it is even being considered underscores the level of concern within the administration over the possible damage from the months-long spying scandal — including the most recent disclosure that the National Security Agency was monitoring the communications of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On Monday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, called for a "total review of all intelligenceprograms" following the Merkel allegations. In a statement, the California Democrat said the White House had informed her that "collection on our allies will not continue."

Wolverine travels through time in 1st X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer

It’s finally here! The first trailer for Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past has arrived, and it finds everyone’s favorite mutant heading back in time to save the world.
Despite the fairly convoluted pitch — with Logan (Hugh Jackman) sent back in time to stop a war before it begins, while simultaneously tying together the modern-day and prequel-era First Class casts — it seems to work.

Hugh Jackman hints at larger role in X-Men Days of Future Past

It looks like Fox knew what they were doing when they brought back Bryan Singer to directX-Men: Days of Future Past. The latest addition to the epic team-up? Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and it looks like he'll be in for a lot more than just a cameo this time around.
The film started as a sequel to the X-Men prequel First Class but has grown into a melding of the modern-day X-Men films and the '60s-set First Class. Cast members from both films are being lined up, with a storyline based on the time-traveling 1980s Days of Future Pastcomic arc.

Singer finally explains the twisty timeframe of X-Men: Days of Future Past

We knew that director Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past was going to be messing with time, but now we finally know exactly when the sequel will be set.
As anyone who saw The Wolverine this weekend already knows, that post-credit stinger scene gave a glimpse at the potential time frame Singer has in mind. But now he’s finally made it clear, so we can start connecting a few of the dots.

Social media experts are today's witch doctors. They promise they have the requisite potion. All you have to do is believe.

Bryan Singer is torturing us again with behind-the-scene images from his latest X-Menoffering.
Now that Singer's wrapped up promoting Jack the Giant Slayer, he can get back to doing what he does best -- making us crazy with photos on his Twitter feed. That's exactly what he did last night when he tweeted another behind-the-scenes glimpse of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Rumor of the Day: X-Men: Days of Future Past villain revealed?

Director Bryan Singer has been nice enough to let us know that a ton of the original X-Men cast will be back for Days of Future Past, and has even let us know the storyline will take cues from the time-traveling comic arc of the same name. But what about the villain?
The folks at Bleeding Cool think they’ve figured it out. In a recent interview with Singer, the writer brought up the possibility that the classic X-Men baddie Apocalypse could be the big antagonist for the sequel, after Singer talked about how the new film is all about “destiny.”
