AWKWARD: Video shows New Jersey Republican Steve Lonegan bristling at wife’s touch

During his concession speech Wednesday night, the Senate candidate was caught in an awkward moment, brushing off his wife’s comforting hand from his shoulder.


New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Steve Lonegan brushed his wife's hand off his shoulder during his concession speech to Cory Booker Wednesday night.

From the looks of it, you'd have thought he'd run against his wife.
During his concession speech to Cory Booker, New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Steve Lonegan combatively pushed his wife's hand from his shoulder and nonchalantly continued on his with address.
The awkward moment was caught on video and put on Internet, where it quickly went viral Thursday.

Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, N.J., lost Wednesday night's special election to Booker 55% to 44%.
At his election night party, he addressed his supporters to thank them for their loyalty and publicly wished Booker luck in his new role.
"I'm hoping God will be with him in the decisions he makes as he goes into the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C.," Lonegan said.
The politician was diagnosed with the degenerative eye disease retinitis pigmentosa as a child, The Star Ledger reports. An aide or a family member usually stands right next to Lonegan during public appearances, to help make sure he's facing the right way.

During his concession speech, Lonegan's wife Lorraine began to gently massage his left shoulder in an apparent gesture of comfort for the evening's loser.
But after about 20 seconds, Lonegan suddenly bristled and brushed off his wife's affection.
The Lonegans later told Inside Edition that the former mayor thought a member of his staff had touched his shoulder.
Lorraine explained, "My touching him during a very important speech – he was caught off guard."

While holding her husband's hands, Lorraine said that she doesn't feel slighted by her husband at all.
"Here’s our hands. These hands have been together 32 years. They belong together and they are together,” Lorraine said.
