War can happen anytime, anywhere, on land or in the sea. In the past, that meant carrying different types of bulky, specialized equipment that would weigh soldiers down and hinder movement. So developing a gun that can work on both land and water makes sense, no?
Built especially for multitasking militants, the ADS "amphibious" assault rifle is a Russian-developed marvel that only requires a switch of a cartridge to alternate between wet or dry situations. The ADS gun, which made its debut at the XVII International State Security Means Exhibition “Interpolitex – 2013” in Moscow, used the previous-gen A-91M bullpup as a building template. Unlike the A-91M bullpup, the ADS rifle features a gas system that has a modified environment selector to allow it to function equally as well in both air or water.
Although the gun can accept standard AK-74 cartridges, the real magic lies with the underwater cartridges: uniquely-shaped bullets that have a longer length and shape allow the gun to shoot seamlessly underwater. The longer bullets take up almost all of the cartridge's length and come in two types: 5.45 PSP hardened steel bullets for combat and 5.45 PSP-U bronze bullets just for practice and training purposes.
The gun can shoot a whopping 800 rounds a minute underwater and even features a removable 40mm grenade launcher that can fire VOG-25 "caseless" grenades via an additional front trigger inside its trigger guard. Additional components like a silencer, blank-firing adapter or muzzle-brake/compensator can be added to the muzzle of the gun, and the top carrying handle is fitted with a rail for attaching a day/night optical sight.
The ADS gun does have its limits though. it can shoot up to 82 feet in 16 foot-deep water with the combat PSP rounds, but that figure reduces drastically to a 52-foot shooting range in 65-foot water depth. Trainees are also out of luck in underwater practice, since the PSP-U bullets can only go half as deep as the combat PSP bullets.
