The future of downtown Seattle is suddenly looking a bit greener, thanks to Amazon. The online retailer has just received initial construction approval for a massive trio of bio-domes that may or may not be a play on the corporation's moniker.
Standing nearly 100 feet tall and covering an entire city block, Amazon's bio-domes will be home to offices, shops, restaurants, and a number of plant species that may or may not originate from a certain area of South America. This is all part of Amazon's massive new headquarters, which will also include three skyscrapers, each standing more than 70 stories tall.
While the domes look beautiful and we're all for adding a bit of green to the cityscape, there is a downside to the proposed construction. As part of Amazon's campus, the bio-domes won't actually be open to the public. All that lush greenery, while visible through the glass, will only be accessible to Amazon employees. On the plus side, Amazon has at least capitulated a bit with Seattle's populace, introducing few benches and paved areas that border the outside walls of the domes. On the other hand, with a campus of this size, we're not exactly sure how many future Seattlites will be left not working for Amazon, so maybe it's a moot point. PHOTOS
