NHTSA cites driver error in New York Prius incident

Government safety officials said Thursday afternoon that a high-profile Prius crash on March 9 in Harrison, N.Y., appears to be a case of driver error.
 
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said, "Information retrieved from the vehicle's onboard computer systems indicated there was no application of the brakes, and the throttle was fully open."
NHTSA's announcement did not please the head of the Harrison police department, who called it "irresponsible and premature," because the investigation is not done and not all data are analyzed.

Toyota, wanting to be neutral, said it will "defer to both" NHTSA and the police.

"Sometimes in a panic, people actually push the gas pedal and think they are braking," said Jesse Toprak, co-founder of research firm TrueCar.com. [Read more...]
