NVIDIA's GeForce 500M rumored launching at CES

NVIDIA was said today by sources to be launching its GeForce 500M notebook graphics at its CES keynote on January 5. It will be based on the same GF114 chip that will show up in the desktop-oriented GTX 580. The exact model number remained unknown to the Fudzilla insiders, as did final specs, but the mid-range 560M may be one of the first.

What is known are the specs of the GF114 core, which is expected to get 384 shader (visual effect) processors, 64 texture address units and 512 texture filtering units. It will also have 64 SFUs. This would make the new chipset about 20 percent faster than the current GeForce GTX 480M, a part normally targeted at desktop replacement notebooks.

The 500 series on the desktop is primarily an optimization of the existing 400 line's architecture to be faster for the same amount of power. It adds hardware tessellation and is more reactive to the workload of the computer by scaling down when its full performance isn't necessary.
