If Game of Thrones and Spartacus just aren't doing it for you, William Wallace wants to help.
A new TV series based on the 1995 film Braveheart—which starred a younger, less controversial Mel Gibson—is in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The producers are hoping to craft something in the vein of the aforementioned pay cable hitsGame of Thrones and Spartacus, combining a legendary tale with a genre that is hotter than ever.
The story follows legendary Scot William Wallace, who led Scottish forces in a war for independence in the 13th century. The series will delve into Wallace's backstory, focusing on the politics and warring that led up to the original film.
The movie was a monster hit, and I'm actually surprised it's taken this long for someone to cash in with a reimagining/follow-up.
Writer Mick Davis is (The Eleventh Hour) is behind the project, which will be shopped around to a network once it's further along in development.
"This was a turbulent time in Scotland's history, in which William Wallace had a starring and pivotal role," producer Alan Clements said. "We plan to delve deep into his character and explore his passions, bringing parts of history to life in a spectacular and raw depiction. With all eyes on Scotland in the current political climate, this also seems to be a very appropriate time to tell this story in more depth."
