After borrowing from the mothership for much of its existence, BBC America is finally diving head-first into making its own shows—and one of the first projects is a sexy, high-concept sci-fi thriller about human cloning. Want to see the first footage from Orphan Black?
The show looks like a smarter, sci-fi-infused version of The CW’s short-lived conspiracy drama Ringer. Only a whole lot better with much bigger secrets buried at its core. With the premiere date coming up on March 30, the network has released a full trailer and synopsis breaking down what we can expect. The story follows a young woman who sees someone who looks just like her commit suicide. So she steals her identity, and apparently gets all her conspiracy-drenched problems to boot.
Here’s the synopsis for the premiere:
Sarah hopes that cleaning out a dead woman’s bank account will solve all her problems. Instead, they multiply at an unnerving rate. Smart, sexy, and pulsating with suspense – BBC America’s new original series Orphan Black features rising star Tatiana Maslany (The Vow, Picture Day). She portrays Sarah, an outsider and orphan whose life changes dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman, “Beth,” who looks just like her. Sarah takes her identity, her boyfriend, and her money. But instead of solving her problems, the street-smart chameleon is thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery. She makes the dizzying discovery that she and the dead woman are clones... but are they the only ones? Sarah quickly finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy, racing to find answers.
Check out the trailer below, which does a good job of juggling all those story lines and twists in about a minute. If nothing else, this show looks like it will be an absolute thrill ride, with layers of intrigue.
