It's time to (once again) face a sad truth: Christian Bale is done playing Batman.
It's been nearly two years since Bale hung up his cowl at the end of shooting The Dark Knight Rises and publicly declared his era of the Batman franchise done, but that hasn't stopped fan speculation that he might someday return. Warner Bros. is prepping a Justice League movie, after all, and though the studio already has a Superman in Henry Cavill (who may or may not join the JLA when that train finally leaves the station, though at the moment it seems likely), it hasn't yet cast a Batman to fill Bale's blockbuster Bat-boots.
With that in mind, it's not hard to imagine the studio backing a big dump truck of money up to Bale's front door and asking him to return as the Dark Knight, but despite what you may be theorizing about his return, Bale has just stepped up once again to confirm that he's done with the character.
“We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” Bale told Entertainment Weekly while promoting his new film Out of the Furnace. “Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.”
And as for Justice League, Bale reaffirmed that not only is he not interested, but he's never even been contacted by Warner Bros. about the project.
”I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul," he said. "I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it.”
So it seems the studio's most successful and longest-serving Caped Crusader is definitely done with the role, and after three incredibly successful films, he's not looking back.
“It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another," he said. "So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”
