LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) — Police say they expect more deaths after a runaway train carrying crude oil derailed in eastern Quebec, sparking explosions and a blaze that destroyed the center of the town of Lac-Megantic and killed at least one person.
Quebec Provincial Police said at a press conference late Saturday that they're having difficulty resolving the number of people unaccounted for because of the possibility some residents were away from town on vacation.
The 73-car train included tanker cars carrying crude oil that caught fire and wiped out some 30 buildings in the town of 6,000, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) east of Montreal.
The head of the train's operator, Rail World Inc., says the train was parked uphill of the town, but it's believed the brakes were properly applied.
