Samsung reportedly plans to unveil a Galaxy smartphone with a three-sided wraparound display next year.
Citing information from "two people familiar with the plans," Bloomberg said Friday that the display would wrap around the edges of the phone, allowing people to read messages from an angle. Each of the three sides would also function independently. From the description, it sounds as if you'd be able to view your normal front display and then see a small amount of additional information wrapped around on the right and left sides of the phone.
No specific launch date has been set, though one of Bloomberg's sources said the phone is likely to roll out in the second half of 2014.
The new phone would use an upgraded version of the Youm technology employed in Samsung's curved-display Galaxy Round smartphone, the sources added. The display could pop up in Samsung's Galaxy S or Note models or debut in a entirely new lineup.
Samsung recently went around the bend from traditional flat displays with the launch of the Galaxy Round, a phone that's curved along the device's vertical axis. But the Round is just the first step. The company is planning phones with bendable screens and eventually ones with foldable screens in the next few years.
Apple is reportedly trying to catch up with its archrival in this contest. The iPhone maker could release two curved-display phones next year, Bloomberg reported earlier this week. The phones would also have built-in sensors designed to detect the amount of pressure being applied to the screen.
