The first clip from Divergent, aka the film series many people think could knock The Hunger Games off the top of the mountain, has finally arrived. Want to see?
Based on Veronica Roth’s hit series of young adult sci-fi novels, the film stars up-and-comer Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Theo James, Maggie Q and quite a few other folks in an alt-world where people are split into factions based on their personalities. Cue intrigue, individuality and hopefully a fair share of ass-kicking.
It’s that plot device that cranks up Tris Prior’s (Woodley) storyline, where she realizes she is “divergent” — aka doesn’t fit into an established group — and gets wrapped up in a deep-rooted conspiracy to take out all the people like her.
So what about the first clip? Honestly, it’s a little underwhelming. The trailer showed off a good bit of action and scope, though this scene focuses on a more intimate moment with Woodley’s character. Considering the potential teenage audience, that makes some sense, but the clip here could also fit in pretty well as part of a random CW drama TV series — and that’s a little worrisome.
But The Hunger Games had its (admittedly small) share of schlocky moments, and turned out all right — so we’re curious to get a look at some more footage. Check out the scene below and let us know what you think:
The film opens March 21, 2014.
