Sort of reminds me of "Blade Runner"..
Antonio Banderas really, really believes in his new sci-fi movie, Automata.
How do we know? Because he not only stars in it, but produced it as well, calling the film "my baby" in a recent Reddit AMA session. He also described the movie as "an approach to science-fiction in a very European way, in an independent way," adding that the film is about "a philosophical, scientific concept called singularity, which is the time in which machines actually overcome the human mind. So it’s a very reflective philosophical science-fiction, going back to the science-fiction I love, like Isaac Asimov. That’s the type of movie we tried to do.”
That sounds like the kind of science-fiction I love too, so that instantly raises my level of interest in the film. And Banderas has never delved into the genre before -- unless you count the, uh, Spy Kids series -- so it'll be interesting to see what he does with it. Banderas plays an investigator who is attempting to find out how the programming of robots is being altered -- something that's apparently illegal in the year 2044, when the movie takes place -- and for what purpose.
Automata also stars Dylan McDermott, Robert Forster and Banderas' now-estranged wife Melanie Griffith. Directed by Gabe Ibanez, the film comes out in theaters and on demand October 10th. Watch the trailer below. VIDEO
