Solid-state drives (SSD) are steadily becoming more practical for consumers. Here's Western Digital shipping its non-spinning drives aimed at you and me, and they're calling them SiliconEdge Blue.
Why should we care? Because they don't have any moving parts, they're great for laptops because they're shock resistant, and enhance any computer with their silence and blazing speed, moving data ten times faster than ordinary spinning hard drives. For you geeks, that's 250MB per second read speed and 170MB per second write speed. Whoa.
There's got to be a catch, though. Unfortunately, solid-state drives are exorbitantly expensive. However, the prices are plummeting, as evidenced by these three 2.5-inch SiliconEdge Blue drives Western Digital is now shipping for laptops and desktops. The 64GB drive retails for $279, compared to prices about three times that a year ago. The 128GB drive is $529 and the 256GB is $999. Wait a year, and this will all be worth it.
