Emmy-winning actor Bryan Cranston is negotiating to play the villain in the upcoming remake of Total Recall. That's the good news.
The other news? According to Heat Vision, the new version of the story will not take place on Mars like Philip K. Dick's original story ("We Can Remember It for You Wholesale") or the 1990 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead, the script for the new film involves a battle between the nation-states Euromerica and New Shanghai.
Cranston will play Vilos Cohaagen (same name as the villain in the 1990 film), who in this version is the leader of Euromerica and is planning to invade New Shanghai.
Doug Quaid, played by Schwarzenegger in the original, is being portrayed this time around by Colin Farrell. In this story, Quaid is a New Shanghai factory worker who starts to think he's a spy but is not sure which side he's spying for.
In the 1990 version, Quaid buys a memory implant in which he visits Mars and has adventures as a secret agent, only to find out that his false memories may actually be true.
Cranston has won multiple Emmys as the star of the AMC series Breaking Bad, while also appearing in films like The Lincoln Lawyer and next year's John Carter of Mars.
The new Total Recall, under the direction of Len Wiseman (Underworld), will arrive on Aug. 3, 2012.
