Team USA's win over Brazil on Sunday in the Women's World Cup was great, but that's nothing compared to the action over in Istanbul at RoboCup 2011, the Robot World Cup. In a scintillating free kick shootout, Team CHARLI from Virginia Tech, managed to pull out a 1-0 win over Team Robo-Erectus from Singapore.
As you will see in the video, Robo-Erectus made a spectacular save during the second shot, but was injured on the play and required emergency surgery.
You might think the action looks kind of slow, but with seven shots and one goal in 27 minutes, this match looks about as exciting to me as human soccer. At least the robots aren't rolling around on the ground feigning injury at the slightest touch.
RoboCup's goal is to encourage robot development, so that by 2050 a team of robots could beat a team of humans in the real World Cup. Looks like they've got their work cut out for them.
