Is it a mini tablet or supersized smartphone? You can categorize the Samsung Galaxy Note and its 5.3-inch screen however you want, because it packs a ridiculous 1280x800 resolution Super AMOLED screen, a pair of beefy cameras and a stylus.
Samsung came out swinging at IFA and after showing off the Galaxy 7.7, the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note is equally as impressive, for its class, which Samsung says sits in between large-screened smartphones and tablets.
It's unprecedented for a device of such a small size to have laptop resolution screens, but here it is. Since the Galaxy Note's display is a Super AMOLED one, blacks are going to be extremely deep and colors are going to look ultra vibrant. It'll be a screen to boast about, for sure.
On the spec side, the Galaxy Note has a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16/32GB of internal storage, 8-megapixel rear with LED flash, 2-megapixel front camera, Android 2.3.5 skinned with TouchWiz and that stylus.
With the pressure-sensitive "S Pen" stylus, you can pretty much doodle and draw on any content to your heart's delight. Sounds like a good ol' PDA. We've yet to test it ourselves, but seeing as this the screen appears to be a capacitative touchscreen and not a resistive one, finger responsiveness shouldn't be a problem.
Apple would tell you otherwise. Recall that Steve Jobs famously said at an iPhone 4 Q&A session last year, "It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it." HTC's Flyer tablet recently revived the stylus, but look how well that turned out (hint: it didn't take the world by storm).
Only time will tell if a stylus is really unwanted for a tablet.
ThisIsMyNext drilled Samsung and learned that there will indeed be 4G flavors with HSPA+ an LTE when it launches (next coming months). Sounds like a deal made in heaven to us.
