Watching actors play against green screens, outfitted in motion capture suits has become a common sight. But for the digital animator lacking the manpower and studio space to manipulate humans in such a way, there's now another way to control your digital characters.
Created by Japan's SoftEther from University of Tsukuba, and ViVienne from The University of Electro-Communications, Qumarion is a tiny 30-centimeter model that can be manipulated to direct the movements of a character in a 3D modeling environment in real-time at 120 frames per second. The mannequin uses 32 sensors on 16 joints to transmit the data to the 3D model and offers the kind of direct hand-to-model control that once took hours to accomplish through software.
