Based on Robert Heinlein's novel of the same name, the 1997 film Starship Troopers is revered by fans as one of the most cheesily awesome, and wildly violent sci-fi films ever made. With a reboot now in the works, it seems the new version will apparently be missing some of that violent, bug-killing charm. But why?
The original Troopers was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who also masterminded sci-fi classics RoboCop and Total Recall. Toby Jaffe, the man bringing both Starship Troopersand Total Recall back to the big screen, said the world is a very different place now—and violent, camp-tinged sci-fi just doesn't fit the big-budget mold anymore.
He tells Empire:
"The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent. With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way."But, don't worry. Though the new Troopers may not boast as much bug-killing gore, Jaffe said it will stick a bit closer to the canon established in Heinlein's original novel. Translation: hello Jump Suits.
"Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more ... Working in a visual-effects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits [armored exoskeletons from Heinlein's novel], for example, which I don't think they could have done before."Are you looking forward to a more grounded take on the film, or do you prefer the ridiculously awesome original?
