Being dead might not stop [REDACTED] from returning to Walking Dead

Last Sunday's episode of The Walking Dead brought with it another big character death, one that even fans of the comics might not have seen coming (not so soon, anyway). But the cast member in question believes the episode might not be the final word on the character. How could the comeback happen? SPOILERS AHEAD!

In "Killer Within," the fourth episode of the record-breaking third season of AMC's hit series, Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies) died during childbirth after a C-section to save her baby, then was shot by her own son to prevent her corpse from walking. It's one of the series' biggest and most heartbreaking deaths so far, but it might not be the end of Lori.

In an interview discussing the episode, Callies said she'd be open to reprising the role, either in flashbacks or the hallucinations of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), but only if it worked for the story overall.

"I think that question has to do with, 'Does it serve the story?' I've always felt that Lori's death was something very important to Rick, which drives him crazy. In the comics, part of his madness is not quite being able to shake her. If that serves the story that they're going to tell going forward, then absolutely. I can't really envision a time where somebody calls me up and goes, 'Hey, we wrote something for you,' and I go, 'No.' I don't quite see that happening. At the same time, we've taken so many departures that, if they feel it would be foolish for Rick to be seeing ghosts, I'm okay with that, too. Anything that serves the story."

In the comics, Lori dies a bit later, during an assault on the prison by the Governor and his men. She takes a shotgun blast and falls on top of her infant daughter, who also dies. Afterward, as Rick and Carl Grimes are wandering alone, mourning, Rick begins to hear Lori's voice on the other end of a dead telephone, and has a long conversation with her before he realizes she's all in his head. That certainly could be enough to inspire the show's writers to reintroduce Lori at some point.

As for Callies, she knew all along that Lori was going to die eventually. She even wanted it, going so far as to fight against former showrunner Frank Darabont's ideas for keeping her alive. And even if we don't see her again, it's clear Lori's left a huge mark on this show, a mark that will no doubt show through in the actions of Rick Grimes for the rest of the season.
