In the little more than a week since Disney announced its purchase of Lucasfilm and plans to make a seventh Star Wars
feature, the Internet has constantly buzzed with speculation over who
might star in, direct and write this new installment, and how badly they
might screw it up. Well, now it seems Disney might have locked down a
writer, and that writer is ...
Michael Arndt, the acclaimed scribe who won an Oscar for his work on Little Miss Sunshine and got nominated for another Oscar for his work on Toy Story 3. Among his forthcoming projects are The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind (working title, obviously), the Tom Cruise sci-fi flick Oblivion, the second installment of The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire, and now, apparently, Star Wars Episode VII.
Vulture cites "informed sources" close to the flick who say that Arndt has turned in a treatment for the film of at least 40 pages, and that he'll likely be at least one of the writers for the final screenplay. The treatment is now making its way around to directors like Brad Bird, Steven Spielberg and J. J. Abrams in an effort to secure the biggest name to take on this new chapter in the franchise.
So far, all we know about the story is that it will likely follow older versions of Luke, Han and Leia. We know more about Arndt, who, apart from being a respect and award-winning screenwriter, is also a Star Wars authority. He even takes time at workshops and film festivals to lecture on why the ending of the original film is among the best in movie history. So, it seems the film would be in good hands with him, provided the Disney Powers That Be don't muck it up too much.
What do you think? Good choice?
