Yet another director's name has surfaced in connection with Star Wars VII, and this time the person has left a trail of tantalizing clues.
According to Bleeding Cool, Brenda Chapman, co-director of Pixar's recent film Brave, is a possible candidate to work on the already highly anticipated Star Wars sequel. Chapman left Pixar in August to take a job at—where else—LucasFilm, where she's been working on a mystery project.
It was speculated that the project in question was an animated film about fairies, but since the Disney purchase of LucasFilm was already going forward in August, along with plans for a new Star Wars film...well, you can figure out the rest.
Chapman herself has thrown fuel on the fire at her Twitter page, where she has been posting a series of cryptic tweets and non-denials to fan questions about her involvement in the new Star Wars saga. Asked about working on the project, Chapman wrote:
Thanks. We will just have to wait and see what happens :)
And then there's this—what Chapman herself wrote when she left Pixar for LucasFilm:
As some of you seem to already know (ah, the marvel of technology), I've started consulting for Lucasfilm Animation. I am not directing. This was a wonderful opportunity to work with someone whom I've admired from a distance in the film industry for years: Kathleen Kennedy. I was completely surprised and honored when she asked me to work with her on this particular project - which I am not at liberty to discuss. (Sorry, I know you wanna know, but I just can't tell ya.) I feel very privileged to have this opportunity, even for a short time.
Notice she says "LucasFilm Animation." That could mean she's a) working on the movie about fairies, b) working on a new, yet-to-be-announced animated Star Wars project or c) getting involved in the animation and visual effects that will likely be a major part of Star Wars VII.
There's also the possibility that she's going to be working on Star Wars VII from the writing side of things, alongside screenwriter Michael Arndt, since she has a good reputation for her storytelling skills.
Update: apparently seeing the speculation connecting her to Star Wars VII, Chapman has written at her Twitter page:
Seeing crazy speculation about me and Star Wars movies on the Interwebs ... I'm a fan, not directing one!
She also wrote:
LOL. My lips are sealed. Other than to say that I love the things I'm currently working on.
The mystery deepens. Does it sound like Chapman could be working on Star Wars VII in some capacity, or is the rumor mill just working overtime these days?
