First look at Bungie's new sci-fi shooter 'Destiny'

Having passed the Halo torch to 343 Industries, Bungie has finally revealed its next shooter game:Destiny. But Destiny is a different kind of first-person shooter game. As Activision's CEO Eric Hirshberg explained to PolygonDestiny is "part first-person shooter, part open-world sandbox and part persistent universe" and is "constantly evolving but retaining players' persistent progression."
Whereas Halo was more linear, Destiny will emphasize customization and constant expansion. According to Bungie, characters can be personalized with a "near limitless combination of armor, weapons, and visual customizations." The story also changes based on a player's actions and experiences. You can think of it like an FPS with MMO-type elements blended in.

Another major difference between Destiny and any other FPS game is that it'll provide a seamless single-player and multiplayer experience where players will meet up and embark on missions and journeys "without visible matchmaking." For this, Destiny will require an always-on Internet connection, although there will reportedly be no subscription fee.
Here's Bungie's quick and dirty synopsis for Destiny, along with a trailer:
"In Destiny you are a Guardian of the last city on Earth, able to wield incredible power. Explore the ancient ruins of our solar system, from the red dunes of Mars to the lush jungles of Venus. Defeat Earth’s enemies. Discover all that we have lost. Become legend."
Destiny will be published by Activision, has been announced for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and has no release date (yet). PC gamers are out of luck, as Bungie describes the game as a "console shooter."
For now, all we have to go by is the trailer above, the 13 pieces of concept art in the gallery below, and Polygon's fantastic preview. PHOTOS
