Ouch! Wolverine loses his mutant powers in int'l Wolverine trailer

Between three X-Men films and a prequel spin-off, we’ve seen several sides of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). But, the upcoming spin-off sequel is definitely trying some different things. Most notably? It looks like Logan is about to get his ass kicked.

As most comic fans know, those trademark Adamantium claws aren’t Wolverine's true mutant power, but his incredible healing abilities that keep him mostly ageless and near-invincible. The claws were added later on, along with an indestructible skeleton.
There have been some allusions to the fact that director James Mangold’s The Wolverine would tackle the mostly-immortal mutant’s mortality, and now we get a look at him taking a hit and not just popping back up in a new trailer. The footage also hints at some of those story elements, and we're curious to see what type of "cure" the film will showcase.

So, what happens when you take away those awesome healing powers? This, apparently:

It’s definitely a risky move to hint that Wolverine could (at least temporarily) lose his powers in this film, but it’s also a brave direction to take a character best known for chomping cigars and kicking butt.

Here’s hoping Mangold’s Japan-set epic can pull it off. Do you think he can?
