Throw another name into the Star Wars VII hat—and rumor has it this candidate is one that George Lucas himself actually met with several months ago to discuss the sci-fi sequel. So who is it?
Indie director Colin Trevorrow, who made a name for himself with the dark time-travel comedy Safety Not Guaranteed, is reportedly in the mix for the latest Star Wars, according to Celebuzz.
Trevorrow may not be a huge name, but Safety was one of the best films released this year, and the indie buzz reportedly caught the attention of Lucas and his team at Lucasfilm.
Though names like Matthew Vaughn might make the most sense to fans, just remember the success former indie romantic comedy director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) had with the Amazing Spider-Man reboot. A good filmmaker is a good filmmaker, and a lot of those storytelling skills can transfer between genres.
Plus, as Bleeding Cool points out, neither Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner nor Return of the Jedi director Richard Marquand were the buzziest names at the time.
So, this could be more legit than it seems at first glance, and we already know Lucas had been working behind the scenes before the Disney deal was announced. Regardless, the latest Star Wars is on the fast track, and most of the names being rumored have probably crossed the short list at some point.
But if they're going to make that 2015 release date, they'll need to make a selection sooner rather than later.
