Getting people to drop serious cash on a 4K TV (unless you want a Seiki)
is a difficult proposition when there is virtually no native 4K content
to watch. Sure, many 4K TVs can upscale 1080p content, but it isn't the
same.
Samsung could change all of that, if the latest report from The Korea Economic Times pans out. According to the report, Samsung's third-generation Galaxy Note, which will be unveiled on September 4 in Berlin, will be capable of recording 4K resolution videos.
4K video recording might seem like overkill for playback on a smartphone display, but the feature is important for driving 4K TVs sales. Similar to the 3D push from a few years ago, it appears companies are turning to homemade videos to drive new formats.
There's still one big gaping question: how is the Galaxy Note III going to store 4K video recordings if they're not heavily compressed? Will Samsung really tell people to just buy higher capacity microSD cards and swap them in and out? Hopefully Samsung will have a clear answer (if the rumor is true) on September 4.
The The Korea Economic Times report also claims the Galaxy Note III will play studio-quality audio at 24-bits, as opposed to the 16-bit audio in the current Note II.
Switching gears for a second, Samsung has also confirmed it'll announce the "Galaxy Gear" smartphone at the same event. In an interview with The Korea Times, Lee Young-hee, Samsung's executive vice president of mobile said the smartwatch will not use a flexible display, as previously rumored:
