India heads for Mars

India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is scheduled to launch today, November 5. By the middle of September 2014, it should be in orbit around the Red Planet, snapping pictures and sniffing for hydrogen and methane. India is describing this mission as more of a technology demonstrator, as opposed to something loaded up with science: MOM's primary goal is to show that India has the savvy to successfully get a spacecraft to Mars, which is as hard to do as it sounds.
