Rob Lowe has played many fictional roles but this one was real - the good Samaritan.
The 50-year-old actor had spent the better part of the day on Saturday sunning on the beach in Hawaii but when a sailboat ran into some trouble off the Kona coast he sprang to action.
Rob, who showed off his muscular physique in a pair of navy and green-striped swim trunks, immediately hopped aboard a jet ski to comb the choppy waters for anyone needing assistance.

As it turned out, four of five passengers aboard the Hawaii Aloha had managed to escape on a life raft and be rescued, but one person was still missing, local KITV news station reported.
The 74-foot vessel was seen bobbing in the precarious shallows and Lowe did what he could to try to find the missing young man.
Rob wore a blue shirt and life vest as he zipped along on back of the water craft, his face wet from the splashing whitewater.

The Parks And Recreation star has been holidaying on the big island of Hawaii with his wife Sheryl Berkoff.
The pair were seen soaking up the sun on the beach on New Year's Eve.
'Let's have a happier, sillier, smarter, sexier, safer, stronger, healthier and lovelier 2015. #HappyNewYear,' Rob tweeted on December 31.

The couple were joined in their island celebration by actor Balthazar Getty, who co-starred with him in the TV drama Brothers & Sisters.
'Brothers & Sisters reunion in the islands with my man @BaltGetty #NoOvenMitts #NoEndlessDinners,' Rob shared alongside a friendly snap with Getty.
