We've known for a while now that Sylvester McCoy has been in talks to play an important role in the upcoming The Hobbit movies. First we thought it would be Bilbo, but then we began hearing rumors that the actor was up for the role of Radagast the Brown. Over the weekend, the former seventh Doctor Who set the record straight.
Appearing at the Armageddon Expo convention in Auckland, New Zealand, McCoy happily confirmed that he was indeed offered the role of the OTHER wizard in the novel (NOT Saruman), Radagast the Brown, and that the only thing left was for him to sign on the contract's dotted line.
While the character appeared in the written The Lord of the Rings, he never made it into Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, and he was only mentioned in The Hobbit. But it seems that Radagast will finally get his due, with Peter Jackson including the wizard in the prequel. Just how big a part it will be remains to be seen.
McCoy had once been in the running to play Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, a role that ultimately went to Ian Holm in the trilogy and will now be played by Sherlock's Martin Freeman. But Peter Jackson—who, it's clear, liked McCoy a lot—seemed determined to offer the actor a role in The Hobbit.
So with rumors buzzing that David Tennant, the former 10th Doctor, will also join The Hobbit cast, perhaps as the Goblin King (we're actually thinking he would be perfect for the King of the Mirkwood Elves—and Legolas' father—Thranduil), The Hobbit could end up having TWO former Time Lords on board.
