RECALL REDUX: TOYOTA RECALLS 2.17 MILLION SUVS, LEXUS MODELS OVER GAS PEDAL JAM

The latest recall adds to the 12 million vehicles Toyota has already recalled globally over similar gas pedal issues over the last two years. The recall comes on the heels of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s conclusion that electronic issues were not to blame for unintended acceleration cases involving Toyota vehicles. Cause for the issue seems to be centered around floor mats and vehicle carpeting that could cause accelerator pedals not to return to their natural idle resting place, but instead to become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position.

The latest recall includes 600,000 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runners, 761,000 2006-2010 Toyota RAV4s and 17,000 2008-2011 Lexus LX 570s to replace floor mats that could shift out of position.
In addition, Toyota is calling back 372,000 2004-2007 Lexus RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400h models and 397,000 2004-2006 Toyota Highlanders to replace driver’s side floor carpet covers and mat retention clips.
Finally, the automaker will recall 20,000 2006 and 2007 Lexus GS sedans to change the shape of a plastic anti-slip pad embedded in the driver’s floor well carpet.
The recall comes at the request of NHTSA, which reviewed 400,000 pages of Toyota documents before concluding that more vehicles needed to be added to the original lists.
“As a result of the agency’s review, NHTSA has asked Toyota to recall these additional vehicles, and now that the company has done so, our investigation is closed,” said NHTSA administrator David Strickland.
The automaker says it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the latest string of recalls.
Owners should expect to receive recall notices in the mail in the coming weeks, according to Toyota. LINK
