Why is there still no 64GB iPhone? Hardcore iPhone fans have been scratching their heads at this for years. M.I.C Gadget somehow managed to get its hands on an iPhone 4 prototype with double the storage of what Apple officially sells right now.
The top of the line iPhone 4 maxes out at 32GB, give or take a few gigs for iOS system stuff, but for the avid iPhone user, 32GB is still not enough (I've already filled mine a handful of times over). We need more gigabytes because we're shooting more HD 720p videos, taking more 5-megapixel pictures, storing way too much music and downloading an astounding amount of apps. M.I.C Gadget tested the 64GB iPhone prototype and says it's the real deal, so why hasn't it been released yet?
Uh, it's a prototype — meaning it wasn't ready for prime time, least Apple didn't think it was. As such, the iPhone's back is marked XXGB, its volume buttons lack "+" and "-" imprints and the ring around the rear camera is missing. However, this doesn't mean Apple won't ever be releasing a higher capacity iPhone 4.
The iPod Touch has had 64GB of storage since its second-gen model and that was quite a while ago. Instead, we think that this prototype is a sign of things to come in the iPhone 5. Like the iPhone 3G to 3GS upgrade, the actual iPhone design remained the same, but its innards became faster. Despite talk about a new aluminum back on the iPhone 5, we think an update will merely be an incremental one.
The iPhone 5 could very well just be an iPhone 4 with 64GB of storage, the faster dual-core A5 processor found in the iPad 2 and possibly 1GB of RAM. Apple doesn't need to reinvent the iPhone 4, it only needs to make it appear reinvented.
