There's no nation better prepared for a quake than Japan. The nation has investedbillions, in fact, in seawalls designed to stymie the power of a tsunami to skyscrapersbuilt to sway instead of snapping or crumbling. Sway they did, looking like trees in a strong wind during Japan's 8.9 magnitude earthquake on Friday.
It's eerie to watch, but even eerier to imagine being inside, watching the world move around you and realizing that you're hundreds of feet above the ground in a tower. At the same time, we haven't heard of any of them coming down — fires and damage, yes — which in itself is pretty amazing.
