Sony Directs German Police to Raid PlayStation 3 Hacker's Home

Sony has been fighting PlayStation 3 hackers in court for the past month, and now it appears the Japanese tech giant has declared all out war on anyone that messes with its console. Sony has confirmed that it directed German police to raid a PS3 hacker's home early yesterday morning.

PlayStation 3 modding community PSX-Scene broke the news that the PS3 hacker known only as graf_chokolo had a few armed, unwelcome visitors to his home in Germany before the sun came up on Wednesday.

"Sony was today at my home with police and got all my stuff and accounts," graf_chokolo claimed in a post. "So be careful from now on." He then went on to reveal that he has released all of his PS3 and Linux reverse engineering secrets on his development page. "PS3 devs, grab it and continue my work. It contains just about everything I know."

A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson confirmed to Kotaku that the police "visit and seizure" did take place, but would not provide further details on the raid, citing its ongoing legal battle.

Graf_chokolo made waves last month when he thumbed his nose at Sony after the company issued Digital Millennium Copyright Act notices to any PS3 modding/hacking community and web site it could find, ordering them to stop posting any and all PS3 hacks and mods. Graf_chokolo responded by saying he would reveal all of his PS3 reverse engineering secrets if Sony continued to attack members of the community. After the raid, he did just that.

Also, as IGN reports, Sony is now actively recruiting attorneys well-versed in copyright, intellectual property, and piracy law in an effort to create a new anti-piracy task force responsible for "overseeing anti-piracy civil lawsuits and providing support to law enforcement and intellectual property agencies on behalf of SCEA." Further, Sony says candidates require "knowledge of online investigative practices, online databases (e.g. how to find owner, administrator, ISP associated with a given domain name, etc.), anti-piracy and DMCA tracker products and services."
