We've been hearing about a sequel to the 2008 monster movie Cloverfield almost since the first one came out. But while nothing has been happening on that front recently, the director says the movie will eventually come out ... someday.
Speaking with Total Film magazine, Matt Reeves, who directed the first film, said that a sequel will get made and that a story is being developed. He just doesn't know when everything will align for the cameras to start rolling.
"Well, you are going to see it—we just don't know when," explained Reeves with a laugh. "At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and J.J. Abrams is very much involved. However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time."
Reeves added that part of the reason developing a story has taken so long is that the trio are trying to figure out how to use the first movie's videocam visual style again without belaboring it: "We want it to be shot like the first but how can you continue that idea successfully for a second time?"
He added, "We have a lot of affection for the original and the sequel can't just be the same thing. But that is tricky when you need to have a monster destroying stuff once again."
Reeves himself has gone on to direct Let Me In, while Goddard is writing Robopocalypse. Abrams, as usual, has got a million projects going at once, with his next directorial effort, Super 8, coming out this summer.
