Rumor mill: Audi readying flagship A9 coupe/convertible

Continuing its push into virtually every niche segment, Audi is reportedly moving forward with a new flagship coupe and convertible model. Referred to as the A9, the new model could arrive in Audi showroom Cross-country rival Mercedes-Benz is said to be readying coupe and convertible versions of its next S-Class – the former replacing the current CL – with Audi’s rumored A9 shaping up to be a legitimate contender. Like the S-Class, the A9 will essentially be a two-door variant of the A8 sedan.
According to CAR, Audi will launch the A9 coupe in 2014, followed by a convertible model in 2015 – beating the S-Class convertible to market by a few months. Both models will feature two-doors and seating for four.
The A9 will be somewhat of a value proposition in the luxury coupe market, slotting somewhere between the $83,000 BMW 6-Series and the $113,000 CL. A number of different engine offerings should be on tap for the A9, including a single turbo version of Audi’s 3.0L V6, a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with 420 horsepower and a 520 horsepower version of the bent eight for the S9 model. Diesel engines will also be on the A9’s option list – including a 350 horsepower 4.2L V8 – but it remains to be seen if Audi would offer those models in the United States.
If the A9 ultimately comes to fruition, expect to see it sometime in 2014.
