For all the grand stories and stunning visuals in HBO's acclaimed Game of Thrones, the cable series has also become famous for another inherent quality—a solid dose of nudity and sex scenes. Now we know why.
Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall, who handled the stellar "Blackwater" episode, recently opened up in an interview about how a lot of those decisions actually come down from the network execs and producers, hoping to take advantage of the loose restrictions on pay cable channels to sex up the series. You may can find dragons elsewhere, but you won't find this much T&A on network TV.
"The weirdest part [of directing Game of Thrones] was when you have one of the exec producers leaning over your shoulder, going, 'You can go full frontal, you know. This is television, you can do whatever you want! And do it! I urge you to do it!' So I was like, 'Okay, well, you're the boss.'"It makes enough sense that HBO would use its medium to help the show stand out, but do you think the extra nudity helps drive the story or eventually becomes a distraction? This particular exec took me to one side and said, 'Look, I represent the pervert side of the audience, okay? Everybody else is the serious drama side, [but] I represent the perv side of the audience, and I'm saying I want full frontal nudity in this scene.' So you go ahead and do it."
