With its biggest hit, The Walking Dead, firmly in the sci-fi category, AMC hopes to double down on the genre soon—next up, aliens. Specifically, a period sci-fi drama set at Area 51.
Dubbed simply Area 51, the new series is based on the book of the same name by Annie Jacobsen, which included tons of information about the legendary base that many believe could be home to a crash-landed UFO.
The network is bringing in Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd to mastermind the series, which will be set in the 1950-1960s. The proposed story would follow scientists and soldiers at the base as they investigate and hide the alleged alien crash. Kind of like a new take on NBC's mid-1990s alien drama Dark Skies, which was fantastic.
Writer Todd E. Kessler (The Good Wife) is putting together the script, and Jacobsen will be involved as a co-producer.
Though the series is just now rolling into the development pipeline, you have to think that if Hurd is involved, it's a project that has a fair amount of clout. What do you think? Would you check this one out?
