Want to see even more of that awesome bubbleship, and an alternate opening scene for Tom Cruise’s Oblivion?
With the sci-fi hit finally out on Blu-ray this week, some deleted and alternate scenes have surfaced, giving us a hint at some of the content that died on the cutting-room floor.
There’s a pretty sweet bubbleship flyby that didn’t make the cut, and it’s crazy to think about the FX money spent on a bit of footage that didn’t even make it in. We also get a more personal scene that helps flesh out some of the characters, as well as an alternate opening that changes up the events at the stadium.
Oblivion was an ambitious summer flick, and showed off some of the most unique visuals of the year. This deleted footage is a nice peek at how it could’ve turned out, and gives a bit more insight into the editing decisions.

The new sci-fi epic from Tom Cruise and the director of Tron: Legacy has finally found its female leads.
According to Variety, Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough have been cast as the two main female characters in the first film directed by Joseph Kosinski since he brought Tron: Legacy to the screen in 2010. Previously called Oblivion, then Horizons, then Oblivion again, the movie is currently without a title until Universal Pictures' marketing department finds one they like.
The movie, based on a graphic novel written by Kosinski himself, follows a soldier (Cruise) who scours the surface of an obliterated Earth looking for remnants of the alien race that leveled the planet a while back. He eventually comes upon a woman in a crashed spaceship who changes his life and everything he knows.
Riseborough (above) plays the mystery woman, while Kurylenko (below) will show up as Cruise's wife. Kurylenko has been seen as a Bond girl in Quantum of Solace and a savage Pictish warrior in the Dark Ages historical thriller Centurion. Cruise reportedly liked her from her very first screen test and preferred her over Olivia Wilde (Cowboys & Aliens), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) and others.
Riseborough, meanwhile, is from England and has not been seen yet in an American film. But she must have been damn good in her screen test since she allegedly beat out Hayley Atwell (Captain America) and Kate Beckinsale (Underworld: Awakening) for the part, which first went to Jessica Chastain (Take Shelter) until she had to drop out because of a scheduling conflict.
Production is supposed to start sometime before the end of March, and the movie is set for release in 2013.
