In our exclusive video interview, Riddick co-star Katee Sackhoff explains why fans won't be let down by the flick's hard R rating.
It's been nine years since The Chronicles of Riddick hit theaters, where it was met with disappointing box-office numbers and a weak critical reception. In the lengthy development of the third film, both writer/director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel pledged that they wouldn't bend to studio pressure for the third Riddick film and tone down to PG-13-level violence and language. Well, we already knew they achieved that goal, but according to Sackhoff, who co-stars as the bounty hunter Dahl, they achieved it and then some. This is definitely a hard-R-rated film.
"I believe the way that Vin explained it is that you lost a lot of the gravity of the world and what was going on," Sackhoff said of the last film's PG-13 rating. "With going back to the hard R, it was definitely a decision that was, from the very beginning, one that David Twohy and Vin were adamant about, and it was one that they embraced wholeheartedly. There's lots of boobies, lots of blood, I think I've heard more F-bombs in like two seconds in a movie than I've ever heard in my entire life. It was kind of one of those movies where they say 'When in doubt, just say f#%k. All the time. Just say it.'"
Sackhoff also talked about the differences between her breakout character, Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck, and Dahl. They're definitely both ass-kicking women, but that's about all they have in common.
"I think because of my own insecurities, I was able to give (Starbuck) a vulnerability that made audiences forgive her for her sins," Sackhoff said. "But Dahl on the other hand, is not that. Dahl is not a nice person. Dahl is crazy. Dahl is, like I said, she's a fantastic soldier, and if she has to shoot you in the face, if she's told to, she will do it. She would probably kill your dog if she was told to."
