It's been three years, but some people still can't let go of their disappointment in the series finale of Lost.
Last night, the acclaimed AMC drama Breaking Bad ended its five-season run with a finale that was, for many, easily the most anticipated episode of television since the Lost finale aired in May 2010. The shows don't have all that much in common beyond a rabid fanbase and a storyline that invited endless speculation and anticipation, but something about the big finale night triggered Lost flashbacks in some viewers, and they wanted to let people know about it.
Specifically, they wanted to let Lost showrunner and co-creator Damon Lindelof -- himself a huge Breaking Bad fan -- know about it. After the Breaking Bad finale ended, viewers of both shows took to Twitter to tell Lindelof that the show's ending simply reinforced how bad his Lost series finale -- which featured a largely ambiguous wrapup and very few of the answers many fans craved -- really was. Some fans even drew a connection between the final shots of each series and declared that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and his crew had deliberately set out to show up Lost. Lindelof got so many tweets about how much better Breaking Bad's ending was than Lost's that he began retweeting them. By the end of the evening Lindelof had retweeted 20 such reactions, from simple declarations to angry bursts of profanity. You can read them all on his feed, but here are a few of our favorites.
So it seems we've found yet another byproduct of the instant access to creators that Twitter allows fans. Your show may have gone off the air three years ago, you may have moved on to numerous other projects since then, and there may have been dozens of other addictive shows on in the interim, but if something triggers a reminder of your biggest failing in the eyes of fans, you can expect to hear about it instantly. Lindelof's probably already preparing for the barrage that'll come when AMC's Mad Men goes off the air in 2015.
